Hardy Murfree

Other: Was a Captain in the militia when the Revolutionary War began. Rose to the rank of Major in the Continental Army and distinguished himself for gallantry at the Battle of Stony Point (New York) in 1779. Held briefly as a prisoner by the British in Charleston, South Carolina in the following year but was back in Murfree's Landing in 1781 in time to ward off a tory raid. Received large tracts of land in Tennessee for his role in the war. He left Murfreesboro with his family soon after the death of his wife in 1803 and moved to Tennessee.  Murfreesboro, former capital of Tennessee, was named in his honor when he moved there from North Carolina.

He was John Murphrey's younger brother. Middle initial "E" came from list of Confederate soldiers.

This Bible was formerly in the possession of Miss Ella Mary Early of Darlington, S. C. Its location since her death in 1977 is unknown.

Residence: Lived in Snow Hill, North Carolina at 106 N. Greene St. His home, built in 1881, is known now as the Murphrey-Morrill House and is noted in the historical district information as "the most fully developed example of the Italianate Revival style in Snow Hill."

Per the June 30, 1881 Goldsboro Messenger, "Two new residences are being constructed, and John Murphrey, an enterprising and prosperous merchant, is adding a handsome and elegant front to his dwelling on Greene St."

Per the October 6, 1881 Goldsboro Messenger, "The Lay Gas Machine Company of Baltimore is supplying the new dwelling and store of Mr. John Murphrey at Snow Hill with gas work."

Per the November 7, 1881 Goldsboro Messenger, "Several handsome private residences have recently been erected. Among this is an elegant one built by the enterprising and prosperous merchant Mr. John Murphrey. It is a model of beauty, convenient, roomy, and attractive, with gas lights and all the modern improvements. It is indeed an ornament to the town."The home is pictured here in the early 1900s and again in 2005.

Per the March 13, 1882 Goldsboro Messenger - "John Murphrey is fitting up his corner store, opposite John R. Dail's hotel, for a drug establishment."

Enlisted in the Confederate Army in Greene County at age 22 as a Corporal on August 13, 1861. (Company F, 40th Regiment North Carolina Troops (3rd Regiment North Carolina Artillery). Was captured at Fort Macon on the coast of North Carolina on April 26, 1862 and paroled. Transferred to Company A, 8th Battalion, North Carolina Partisan Rangers in November - December 1862. Transferred to Company E, 8th Battalion on June 1, 1863. Transferred to Company H., 66th Regiment North Carolina Troops on October 2, 1863.

Listed (#287) as a retail merchant on the 1870 census taken on August 1, 1870.. In addition to his wife Martha and children, Charley and Robert, Elizabeth Jones (age 18)(find out who she married) and Sara Tindal (age 70) lived with him at that time. The value of his real estate was listed as $1,500 and personal estate $2,500 in the census. W. L. Jones (age 32) was #288 on the census list and John A. Dail was #289.

Listed as the County Treasurer for Greene County from 1871-1876.

John Murphy vs. Wilmington & Weldon Railroad Co., from Greene. J. H. Haughton for plaintiff, Moore & Gatling for the Defendant.
Records of the case are contained in the North Carolina Archives (Reel 285, Case 10,869).
John Murphrey's wagon and supplies which were being loaded at the Goldsboro train station were hit by a train. He sued the railroad. The Supreme Court ruled for the railroad.

Records of the case are contained in the North Carolina Archives (Reel 465, Case 16,529). Marriage notice from an 1874 Raleigh newspaper - "Murphy - JONES - In Raleigh, on the 1st of July, by Rev. A. W. Mangum, Mr. John Murphy, of Greene County, N. C., and Miss Mollie A. Jones of Raleigh."

On September 22, 1874, John Murphrey is listed as postmaster for the Snow Hill Post Office.

In 1876, his business in Snow Hill, N. C. was named John Murphrey. By 1882, W. F. Dail had taken over the store that he had operated. The store was next door to Potter & Exum Shop on Main Street.

Death Notes from the Raleigh State Chronicle - "Murphrey, John: October 7, 1889 at his home in Snow Hill, Greene County. He was about 50 years old and had been a prominent and leading business man. His remains were brought to Raleigh for interment. The funeral services were conducted at Edenton Street M. E. Church (10-11-89)."

Death Notes from The Headlight, the Goldsboro newspaper, on October 9, 1889, Vol. III, No. 3. - "The unwelcome news reaches us from Snow Hill of the death of Mr. John Murphy, a prominent merchant which sad event occurred Monday morning at his residence after a lingering illness. His remains were taken to Raleigh yesterday evening, where the interment took place."

John Murphrey is buried with his wife Mollie Jones in the Mordecai Section of Raleigh's Oakwood Cemetery.

Jesse Arthur Jones (brother-in-law and good friend) of Raleigh, N. C. was the executor of John Murphrey's will. W. Heywood Dail of Snow Hill also signed. The original will is located in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

One of the founders of East Carolina University. Generally recognized as the primary promoter of the idea of a normal school for the East (became East Carolina University, originally , the East Carolina Teachers Training School). Was one of the organizers of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce in 1906. Chairman of the "Committee of Eighty," composed of community leaders throughout Pitt County, to coordinate the campaign for the new school.
